About the Artist

Joe Ruiz Grandee was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1929 and devoted his life to capturing the art and history of the American West on canvas. A painter of exceptional narrative skill, he became one of Texas's foremost historical illustrators, bringing to life the Texas Rangers, frontier settlements, Native Americans, and the open range in richly detailed, dramatic compositions. In 1969–1970 Grandee was appointed Official Texas State Artist by the Governor of Texas — an honor recognizing his contribution to preserving and celebrating Texas heritage through painting. He illustrated major publications on Texas history and was deeply involved with Western art organizations throughout his career, earning recognition both as a fine artist and as a documentarian of the Texas frontier experience. His books and prints reached a wide audience, and his original paintings are sought after by collectors of Texas history and Western art. Grandee died in 2014, leaving a body of work that stands as both fine art and historical record.
